Now, because it is a live action movie, I think they wanted to ground it to realism somewhat, so having characters like Vegeta and Trunks who just take physics, bend it over, and show it who's boss would've been impractical (even though Vegeta is my favourite saiyan) … not to mention that the world of Dragonball "Z" is almost 300 episodes, not including movies.
