"This contest has opened up a whole new world for me," enthused Walch, a math and biophysics double-major who said she's eager to come up with the requisite month's worth of new strips for publication in Style in August.

By winning the contest, Walch -- a 21-year-old math and biophysics major at the College of William and Mary -- received a $1,000 prize.

"I've never seriously sat down and considered being a syndicated cartoonist as my career," says Walch, a native of Princeton, N.J., whose family moved to Virginia when she was 11.

As for her computer-themed humor, Walch notes that not only does she draw her comics digitally, but also that her father (Mark Anthony Walch) is a software executive, and mom (Sharon Murphy Walch) is a grade-school technology teacher.
