Wintrust Financial Corp., a financial-services holding company, hired two heads of credit this summer who got flummoxed by a lunch invitation from an important board committee chairman, according to Chief Executive Edward J. Wehmer.

Mr. Wehmer says he suggested the lunch because the director wanted to know the newcomers better -- and their late September meal satisfied his need.
