This practice intensified following the suicide in 1969 of Assia Wevill, the woman for whom Ted Hughes had left Plath, which led to claims that Hughes had been abusive toward Plath.

In the aftermath of his wife's death, followed by the suicide of his lover, Assia Wevill, Hughes himself went to ground, living in Devon, writing about the mysteries of nature and keeping his counsel.
