Four endemic bird genera are found in this part of the hotspot, including three that are widespread (Cyanochen, Rougetius, and Parophasma) and one that has a very localized distribution in the south (Zavattariornis).
The ecoregion also contains part of the South Ethiopian highlands endemic bird area, centered on the forests, grasslands, and thickets to the southwest of the Bale Mountains and including the Yabello Sanctuary at around 1,700 meters where the endemic Sidamo lark (Heteromirafra sidamoensis, EN), white-tailed swallow (Hirundo megaensis, VU) and Ethiopian bush-crow (Zavattariornis stresemanni, VU) occur.
