From Latin ab ("away from") and Ancient Greek σκοπός (skopos, "target, aim"). Term first described by Dr. R. J. Mole in 1953 in the British Journal of Radiology, "Whole body irradiation- radiobiology or medicine?" . Br. J. Radiol., 26: 234-241, 1953.
