It is an evergreen tree, with thick shining leaves and milky juice, a native of tropical America, and is often cultivated for its edible fruit, the sapodilla or sapodilla plum. Its bark (Jamaica bark) is astringent and is used as a febrifuge; the seeds are aperient and diuretic.
