From Middle English adle, from Old English ādl ("disease, infirmity, sickness, pain, languishing sickness, consumption"), from Proto-Germanic *aidlō, *aidlaz (“burning, fever, disease”), from Proto-Indo-European *aidh- (“to burn, shine”). Cognate with Middle Low German ādel ("ulcer, wound, sore").
