Also called the middleman or lineman's knot; used in climbing to secure the middle climber. It's also used in place of a clove hitch to equalize anchors for a top rope setup in some cases, and in Tyrolean traverses. The Alpine butterfly is easier to untie and uses less rope than a figure eight.
