From Middle English onkome ("a swelling"), from earlier oncome, oncume ("an unexpected evil"), from Middle English ancomen, oncumen, from Old English oncumen, past particple of ancuman ("to arrive, come upon, happen"), equivalent to on- +‎ come. Cognate with Dutch aankomen ("to arrive"), German ankommen ("to arrive"), Swedish ankomma ("to arrive").
