Variant of onslaught, perhaps due to Middle English sleight, sleȝt, slæht, from Old English sleht, slieht, sleaht ("stroke, striking, slaughter, murder, death"), from Proto-Germanic *slahtiz (“hitting, beating, killing, murder”), from Proto-Indo-European *slak- (“to hit, hammer”).
