  • noun A genus of anthropoid apes, of the family Simiidæ and subfamily Simiinæ, containing only the chimpanzee: proposed by De Blainville as a substitute for Troglodytes (Geoffroy), preoccupied in ornithology. Both these names are antedated by Mimetes (Leach, 1819).
