Sometimes they don't know their art from their directum, though.
I was once directed to walk into a hospital in an urgent and anxious manner (after learning that a 'family member' was involved in a local disaster and had been admitted). Rehearsals completed, on final checks art department handed me a bag of grapes to carry!

I've noticed that AD tends to be under-resourced on Australian pics. Producers, forever under pressure to wind their budgets back, will assume they can get second-hand props more easily than they can. Yes, there is second-hand stuff out there but assembling the correct look - even 80's home interiors look quite different to current ones - is a big job.

Maybe you were so distraught over hearing the news that as you ran in a panic to the hospital, you continued to clutch the bag of grapes -- as if holding onto a life line. Later, the director thought, when you received the bad news about the death of your "family member" they would do a dramatic close up of you squeezing the grapes as you fell to your knees in agony (it begins to rain). The bits of grape seeds, flesh and juice slowing oozing off your tortured fingers, drip, drip, dripping to the ground...
Or maybe they just fucked up.

Well, yes, but I can't imagine caring enough about a bag of grapes to carry them all the way (and, if you drove, it's downright silly to assume you'd bring them inside).
