From Old English ætgār ("a short spear, dart, javelin, a kind of dart or other weapon to cast at the enemy"), equivalent to at- +‎ gar (“spear”). Cognate with Old Frisian etgēr, Old High German azgēr, azigēr, Icelandic atgeirr ("spear").
