From Middle English bekerven, bikeorven, from Old English beceorfan ("to becarve, cut off, separate, cut or pare away, deprive a person of something by cutting, amputate, behead"), equivalent to be- +‎ carve. Cognate with Old Frisian bikerva ("to amputate").
