From Middle Dutch berispen, berespen, berepsen, from be- + *repsen, from Old Dutch *repsōn (“to blame, accuse”), from Proto-Germanic *rafisōnan, *rafisjanan (“to blame”), from Proto-Indo-European *rep- (“to tear, snatch”). Cognate with Middle Low German berispen, Middle High German berespen, berefsen; compare also Old Saxon ripsōn ("to blame, accuse"), Old High German refsen ("to reprove, punish, scold, rebuke, threaten, strike"), Old English repsan, refsan ("to reprove, blame, seize"), Old Norse repsa, refsa ("to punish, censure").
