From Middle English bewinden, biwinden, from Old English bewindan ("to wind round, clasp, entwine, envelop, encircle, surround, brandish (a sword), turn, wind, revolve"), from Proto-Germanic *biwindanan (“to wind round”), equivalent to be- +‎ wind. Cognate with Middle Low German bewinden ("to entwine, wrap"), German bewinden ("intertwine, wind around"), Gothic  (biwindan, "to entwine, wrap").
