Indeed, by looking at the value, you could also see which XSD datatypes it corresponded too: imagine a bitset for each element with one bit per built-in XSD type, so when the instance has an attribute X with a value 10, the trie augmenter would would set the xs: byte bit and when it found a value of 300 it would set the xs: short bit, and when validating the trie for datatypes it would see if the corresponding bit were set.
