That alien appearance combined with their notorious fierceness both on a fishing line and in hand that fish will bite you! and their relative rarity make bowfins a subject of considerable confusion among those exposed to the fish for the first time.
Enough folks confuse bowfins for snakeheads that TPWD developed a flier on how to differentiate between the two fish and posted it on the agency's website.
But they don't know about bowfins, a native fish that somewhat resembles the reptilian-looking snakeheads.
