If I want fresh brandywines and Pruden's purple tomatoes this year, I still have to plant seeds in March.
Chigiy, the brandywines are always slow to produce, but the flavor is wonderful.
My brandywines are still green, but a few are turning kind of yellow-green so it won't be long now.
There are also purple Cherokees and brandywines, in addition to a long list of hybrids - from the small, round globes of grape tomatoes that pack a sweet burst of flavor to the palm-sized beefsteaks that are usually sliced thick.
Have they decided, like me, that Juliets are fine as emergency back-up homegrown tomatoes, but that purple cherokees, celebrities, sun golds, and brandywines taste a lot better?
