"There's a more than average amount of change in FTSE 100 brokerships at the moment," says Tim Waddell, co-head of corporate broking at UBS AG.
In the past three months, at least four potentially lucrative brokerships for FTSE 100 companies have changed hands and senior brokers talk of at least half a dozen big companies planning reviews of their brokers this spring.
Quite how lucrative this work is was highlighted last year by US investment bank JP Morgan's willingness to pay around £1bn to buy out its UK joint venture - JP Morgan Cazenove - which holds more FTSE 100 brokerships than any other firm.
