  • noun In the manufacture of sulphuric acid, the mixture of gases from the kiln or burner in which sulphur as such, or the sulphur of iron pyrites, is converted into sulphur dioxid by union with atmospheric oxygen. This mixture consists mainly of sulphur dioxid, surplus oxygen, and the whole of the nitrogen of the air used.
