If the dis-figuration is so intense that their regular normal day-to-day life is going to be severely impaired -- like kids who are born with cheiloschisis or palatoschisis (harelip), they're going to find it REALLY hard to get through their childhood with all the kids ridiculing them for their looks, (and how many children can parents save their child from?) in which case, surgery does give this child a better chance at going through her/his life with less society induced pain.
