  • noun In library-cataloguing, the number, or number and letter, which shows the class (as literature, history, philosophy, or science) to which a book belongs or the subject of which it treats. It is usually followed by other figures which indicate the particular division, subdivision, or section of the subject treated, and the number of the book.
