  • noun The lighter and more volatile portion of the distillate from coal-tar, consisting chiefly of hydrocarbons of the benzene series, and therefore quite different from the naphtha obtained from petroleum, although in part applied to the same uses, as a solvent, to improve the illuminating character of gas, etc.
