  • n. a horizontal piece of timber connecting and tying together two opposite rafters; -- also, called simply collar.

  • n. A beam or piece of timber extending between two opposite rafters, at some height above their base. It prevents sagging, and also serves as a strut or tie, or as a ceiling-joist for a garret. Sometimes called wind-beam.
