A little far afield from the original post, but it does lead into the logical concepts of contradictions, converses, and contrapositives which a couple of commenters have mentioned, and which I think provides a more theoretical response to the concepts raised in the original post.
The two contrapositives taken together let us conclude that a = b.
As for labour, don't forget the law of contrapositives!
