The adiabatic lapse rate (2 degrees F. cooler with each thousand feet of altitude gain) ensures that it's cooler at altitude, but with warming at sea-level, the alpine temperatures also the point where mountain species are put at risk of survival (where can they go for cooler air?), not to mention the major mischief it plays with snowpack, say, in the Sierra Nevadas, impacting water availability for, say, Los Angeles.
