• noun A genus of small American finches, of the family Fringillidæ; the grasshopper-sparrows, of which there are several species, as the yellow-winged (C. passerinus), Henslow's (C. henslowi), and Le Conte's (C. lecontii), of diminutive size, with turgid bills, short wings, acute tail-feathers, and a general appearance suggestive of miniature quails, whence the generic name.
