And it's such a huge part of pop culture here that the rest of us grew up sort of immersed in it - there was no Doctor Who on the telly until I was 19, but when I was little I still knew about the Tardis and daleks and cybermen....apparently in a recent National Trust survey about twice as many 8 year olds could identify a dalek as could identify a barn owl :
