  • A type of landslide characterized by the sudden and chaotic movement of rocks, soil, and debris mixed with water or ice. These may be caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or simply, by the supersaturation of mountain slopes by excessive moisture, the latter generally because of lower cohesion of the soil/rock matrix and high water content on steeper slopes.
