From Ancient Greek δωδεκαδάκτυλον (dōdekadaktulon), from δώδεκα (dōdeka, "twelve") + δάκτυλος (daktulos, "finger") ≅ “twelve-fingers[-long thing]”; compare English duodenum and German Zwölffingerdarm; cognate with Greek δωδεκαδάκτυλο (dodekadáktylo) and Italian dodecadattilo.
