A ship design in which a tank's base is formed by two complete layers of watertight hull surface. The outer layer is the normal ship's hull; the inner hull is a few feet higher and forms a redundant barrier in case the outer hull sustains damage or leaks. The space between the bottoms is often used to store ballast water or fuel.
