Anyways, I thought the n64 controller was brilliant for shooters, waaaayy better analogue stick than the dualshock, which only came halfway through the playstation life.

None of those limitations you mentioned apply, those limitations exist on controllers that emulate the dualshock controller, stuff like the Split Fish controller, they have to deal with dead space and all other quirks programmed for normal controllers ..
