Lisa Warnecke of the University of New England in New South Wales found that dunnarts bask to warm their body while arousing from torpor - a short hibernation that some mammals can go into for a few hours each day.
The research, which Warnecke undertook as part of her PhD, reveals that combining basking with torpor can allow dunnarts to survive on a quarter of the food and water they would normally require.
