In geology, effective porosity refers to the interconnected pore volume or void space in a rock formation that contributes to fluid flow or permeability in a reservoir. Effective porosity excludes isolated pore spaces or pore spaces occupied by water that is tightly adsorbed on clay minerals or other grains.
