From Middle English eldmoder, from Old English ealdmōdor ("grandmother"), equivalent to eld (“old”) +‎ mother. Cognate with Scots eldmoder, eldmother ("mother-in-law"), Old Frisian aldmōder, aldemōder ("grandmother").
