Asmal commended the Ivory Park community and the Midrand council for creating an open space to plant trees, and for the initiative by the community to create a recreational park, installing irrigation, planting grass on embarkments, which proved that the locals wanted to transform their surrounding for all to enjoy a clean and healthy environment.
It proceeded slowly, partly because of the expense and difficulty of putting up lasting embarkments, and partly because of the opposition of the fenmen, or dwellers in the marshy districts, whose livelihood was obtained by catching the fish and water fowl that the improvements would drive away.
