  • noun In parts of the United States acquired from Mexico, one who projects and manages a mercantile or similar enterprise, or takes a leading part in it, for his own profit and at his own risk, usually implying the possession and control of a concession or grant from government in the nature of a privilege or monopoly.
  • noun More specifically, a contractor who engages with the Mexican government to introduce a body of foreign settlers. Also called hobladore.
