Pyorrhea, or Riggs's disease, affects the tissues surrounding the root of the tooth, and is accompanied with infection by pus bacteria, and possibly also by animal parasites, termed endameba.
A number of investigators have reported the presence of an animal parasite, the _endameba buccalis_, in all cases of pyorrhea, and it is thought that this parasite may be one of the principal causes of this disease.
