I was sent there from my home base in Oakland, California in 1968 to aid in an examination of a savings and loan association in Sparta which was an event of no particular consequence but was a lot of fun since those "hicks" from Sparta were way too nice for savings and loan examiners from the Bay Area but while I fail to remember the scandals that resulted in our assignment there I still remember that South Central Illinois where Sparta is located is about as rednecky as one can get without being institutionalized but full of extraordinarily nice people who loved to go out to local bars and eat fried zucchini and mushrooms and drink cold tap beer and I have never been around finer "salt-of-the-earth" country folk in my life as I was there.
