Often shortened to ET; this tank supplies fuel, along with the solid rocket boosters, to launch the orbiter. The tank is 154 feet tall and carries about a half-million gallons of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. This disposable tank supplies fuel to the orbiter's three engines for about eight or nine minutes, before it is jettisoned to burn up upon re-entry.
