Goldthread falsecypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera filifera 'Aurea') is relatively shade-tolerant and has a willowy growth habit that stands as a contrast in form and leaf color to other greenery.
The mounds have moss-laden rocks on them and were planted with a dwarf Japanese maple (murasaki kiyohime), hinoki falsecypress and satsuki azaleas.
A. Deer are known to eat hinoki falsecypress, but I think the tattered shrub was probably a casualty of deer rutting.
