From Middle English flone, flon, flan, from Old English flān ("barb, arrow, javelin, dart"), from Proto-Germanic *flainaz (“fork-point, prong, hook, spear-tip”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)plei- (“to divide, split, splice”). Cognate with Icelandic fleinn ("thorn, arrow, dart, pike, fluke").
