From Middle English forgniden, from Old English forgnīdan ("to grind together, dash down, crush, break"), from Proto-Germanic *fargnīdanan (“to rub, grind, crush, crumble”), equivalent to for- +‎ gnide. Cognate with Old High German firgnītan ("to crush, destroy").
