From Middle English forhelen, from Old English forhelan ("to cover up, conceal"), from Proto-Germanic *furhelanan, *farhelanan (“to conceal, hide”), equivalent to for- +‎ hele. Cognate with Dutch verhelen ("to conceal"), German verhehlen ("to hide, conceal").
