From Middle English forstelen, from Old English forstelan ("to steal away, steal, rob, deprive"), from Proto-Germanic *farstelanan, *frastelanan (“to steal, steal away”), equivalent to for- +‎ steal. Cognate with Middle Low German vorstelen ("to steal away"), Middle High German ferstelan ("to steal away").
