From Middle English forthgon, forthgan, from Old English forþgān ("to go forth, advance, proceed, pass by, go away, go on, precede, succeed"), from Proto-Germanic *furþa- (“forth”), *gānan (“to go”), equivalent to forth- +‎ go. Cognate with Dutch voortgaan ("to continue, proceed, go ahead"), German fortgehen ("to go away, leave, depart, blin"), Swedish fortgå ("to continue, go on, proceed").
