From Middle English forthyrsten, from Old English *forþyrstan ("to be athirst"), from Proto-Germanic *fur- (“for-”), *þurstijanan (“to thirst”), equivalent to for- +‎ thirst. Cognate with Low German verdörsten ("to forthirst"), German verdursten ("to die of thirst"), Danish fortørste ("to forthirst").
