  • noun A small steel frame inclosing fire-brick, of various shapes, and arranged with either a hearth on which the flames play or a narrow slot through which the flames pass in a thin sheet. It is used in annealing rods, forging cutlery, brazing small sheets of metal, and heating lathe-tools preparatory to hardening them.
